Revegetation
Recent heavy rains have resulted in excellent growing conditions following a very dry spring
and summer. Forbs and especially warm season grasses are now showing good signs of
growth. Annual weeds provide some protection to the soil and steep slope areas while
perennial grasses become established. Knapweed continues to spread, and was noted on
the pond 7 embankment. The Division suggests that the operator develop a weed control
plan for next season to systematically treat all reclaimed areas of the mine site.
Excess Spoil
Fill downdrains ultimately direct the vast majority of flow from the disturbed area to sediment
ponds at this site. Every downdrain showed some signs of erosion or rearrangement due to
the storm runoff, as shown below in the photographs. The steep riprap channel leading to
pond 9 suffered some significant damage over its entire length.
r
- 7 '.
IN.
^Y-??1?'i.? ,.tit,''.??.- 'F 1? •yt? y?af JG"•pn2xA + ? ..
Side collection ditch blocked
The operator believes that the 10-year, 24-hour storm event was exceeded based on rain
gauge data collected over a period of three days. The Division requests that rain gauge data
be submitted in writing to the Division along with a plan and schedule for repairs to
hydrologic structures. In addition to the repair plan, the Division would also like NECC to
submit a schedule for completion of the remaining reclamation plan including of topsoiling
