SOIL LOSS COMPARISON - BLUE RIBBON MINE
RECLAIMED VERSUS ORIGINAL CONDITIONS
The following calculations are presented to determine if untreated drainage from the
reclaimed Blue Ribbon Mine Grassland Community is contributing suspended solids to
streamflow or runoff outside the permit area in excess of pre-mining levels.
The baseline data for comparison is the Oak Shrub community that existed prior to
mining. Baseline data is sketchy in the permit. Based on the data in the permit, page
63, the dominant overstory is Oak which varies in height from 1 to 6 meters. Very little
grass is under the dense stands of Oak. The following data in inferred from the
discussion in the permit in section 2.04.10.
Baseline
Total Vegetation Cover 25.0%
Perennial Cover:
Grasses, etc. 25.0%
Forbs 0.0%
Shrubs 0.0%
Trees 75.0%
Total Perennial Cover 25.0%
Litter 30.0%
Perennial Cover + Litter 55.0%
Canopy (Trees and Shrubs) 75.0%
The condition of the reclaimed Blue Ribbon Mine Site is obtained from the May 2007
vegetation study. The results of this vegetation report, presented in Table 3 of the
report, are as follows:
Total Vegetation Cover
Perennial Cover:
Grasses, etc.
Forbs
Shrubs
Trees
Reclaimed
60.0%
30.0%
27.4%
0.8%
0.0%
1 of 4 7/08
