Southfield responded to the mid-term review question
regarding these holes (via MR-55) stating that they would evaluate all holes drilled by Dorchester and Energy
Fuels and inform the Division of their plans to abandon and reclaim those that have not already been reclaimed.
However, they stay silent about OTHER holes starting with designations C, CC, DH, NC, and WCC. In addition to
the three above, the list includes;
Hole Date Drilled
DH-4 1986
NC-4 1978
NC-8 1979
NC-10 1979
WCC-05 1979
WCC-06 1979
Golden Eagle
Hole Date Drilled
LA-218 completed as water monitoring well by CF & I in April 1975
We have a Handbook Memorandum titled "Bond Release on Pre-law and Interim Program Areas". We could
argue that the well is a structure and until the structure was removed, the land can't be reclaimed to the any
standards (or requirements) of even the reclamation act of 1969. That would still leave the 1963 hole in question.
Seems like the staff needs some guidance regarding what is actually required based on the date of drilling or
establishing the borehole or well for those situations where there is no record of the hole being used during the
permanent program rules.
Kent Gorham
Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
Colorado Department of Natural Resources
303-866-4931
6/2/2008
