If sample container cannot be filled directly, fill the clean beakers used
for groundwater stabilization measurements and pour from the beaker into the
sample container.
3. Wipe the sample container dry with new clean paper towel and label. The
label should include the Well I.D. Number, the date, time, and samplers
signature. .
4. Preserve the sample by immediately placing the sample into a cooler with ice
or frozen cool packs.
5. Decontaminate all the sampling equipment and rinse 3 times with distilled
water.
6. Take photos of the well head and sampling activities as appropriate. Make
note of the number of photos taken in logbook.
7. Clean the area by placing all trash into trash bags and replacing pump
equipment or piping.
8. Complete the chain of custody.
9. Notify the owner that sampling is complete and depart.
10. Deliver the sample to the laboratory using proper chain of custody procedures.
To assure sample integrity and prevent potential problems the following guidelines
should be followed as much as possible:
• Sampling equipment should only contact the well water or clean plastic surfaces.
Contaminants should be avoided by assuring that the equipment does not contact
the ground or any other surfaces that could effect the integrity of the sample.
• Use disposable gloves as much as possible changing them frequently when they
become soiled. Use new disposable gloves when performing sample collection.
• Park vehicles downwind of the sampling location at least 30 feet from the well.
Do not fuel the vehicle on this location of carry any chemicals, solvents or fuels
during the sampling event.
• Avoid sampling when wind or precipitation may cause contamination in the
sample.
• Make certain that no water treatment equipment (i.e. chlorinating, filtration, etc.)
is upstream of the sample collection location.
5 Field Data and Reporting
The following information should be entered into the field log book.
• location
• weather conditions
7
