New Horizon Mine: 2007 Vegetation Sampling for Phase 2 Bond Release
• recalculated based on dry weights. For reference areas and Phase 3 eligible reclaimed areas, a
simple random sampling design was employed, and samples were taken in the order of the
arbitrary numbers assigned to random points. For Phase 2 eligible reclaimed areas, which
included Phase 3 eligible areas, an area-weighted stratified sampling design was employed, so
that samples already taken for Phase 3 purposes could be used for Phase 2 analysis over a
broader area. For Phase 2 sampling, the areas of irrigated pasture and dryland pasture Phase
2 "only" and Phase 3 areas were considered as strata, and their areas in acres calculated using
GIS. The proportion of area within each stratum was calculated, and for Phase 2 analysis we
included a number of Phase 3 area samples with samples from the Phase 2 "only" areas, so
that the proportion of samples from Phase 3 areas was equal to the proportion of area in Phase
3 areas. Table 1 shows the acres and proportions of Phase 2 and Phase 3 reclaimed lands
where vegetation measurements were conducted.
Table 1.
