°2000 GeoS~mcc Consultants
1. INTRODUCTION
This report was prepared by Dr. Zehong Yuan, P.E., of GeoSyrttec Consultants
(GeoSyntec), Atlanta, Georgia. The report was reviewed by Mr. Robert H. Swan, Jr.,
also of GeoSyntec, in accordance with the internal peer review policy of the firm. The
laboratory testing program described in this report was performed at the request and
authorization of Mr. Terry Mandziak, P.E. of Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining
Company (CC&V), Victor, Colorado.
CC&V authorized GeoSyntec to undertake a laboratory testing program to evaluate
the interface shearing resistance between three site soils and two types or geomembrane
proposed for use in the lining system of Pad No. 1 of the Valley Leach Facility.
GeoSyntec understands that the sample preparation procedures and testing conditions
used in the testing program were selected by Mr. Mandziak of CC&V to model
anticipated field conditions. The interface direct shear testing was conducted at
GeoSyntec's Soil-Geosynthetic Interaction Testing Laboratory located in Atlanta,
Georgia
2. TESTING PROGRAM
2.1 Scooe
The testing program consisted of three interface direct sheaz test series. Each
interface direct shear test serics consisted of a single, individual direct shear test.
2.2 Testing Method
The Interface direct shear tests were conducted in accordance with the Amcrican
Society for Testing an,d Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method D 5321, "Determining
the Coefficient of Soil and Geosynthetic or Geosvnthetic and Geosynthetic Friction by
the Direct Shear Method". The tests were conducted in a largc direct shear device
containing an upper and lower shear box. The upper shear box measured 6 in. by 6 in.
(1 SO mtn by 150 mm) in plan aad 3 in. (75 rnm) in depth The lower shear box measured
12 in. by 14 in. (300 mm by 350 mm} in plan and 3 in. (75 nun) in depth
.~ GLI1126lSG100011.DOC 1
00.02.23
