18 Main project area hydrologic conditions
Groundwater
Groundwater conditions in Vindicator Valley are monitored at two monitoring wells
(Figure 3.1). The monitoring wells are designated VIN-2A (granite), and VIN-26
(alluvium, shallow granite) have replaced VIN-1A and VIN-16 as part of the East
Cresson Mine Extension (ECME) permit approval. Monitoring wells with the "B"
designation are generally shallow and are screened in the alluvium and the shallow
bedrock. Monitoring wells with the "A" designation are generally deeper and are
screened in the bedrock. The period of record, water quality statistics, water level and
field parameter data summaries have been compiled for monitoring well VIN-2B and is
provided in Table A27 (Attachment A). VIN-2A has not been sampled for laboratory
water quality parameters due to dry conditions or insufficient water to collect a sample
for laboratory analysis. Field conductivity and pH data are available for nine site visits;
these data are compiled in Table A28 (Attachment A).
Shallow groundwater levels in VIN-26 vary from 99.3 to 113.5 feet bgl. Groundwater
levels in VIN-2A vary from 232.2 feet bgl to 259.1 feet bgl. Groundwater samples in
Vindicator Valley are characterized as calcium-sulfate waters. A piper plot (Figure 3.8)
shows the major ion water chemistry for the Vindicator Valley groundwater monitoring
well. Data show average field pH values in the shallow bedrock of 7.2 su in VIN-2B.
Nitrate values are less than detection (0.05 mg/L) in VIN-26. Sulfate values averaged
671 mg/L in VIN-2B.
Data show an average field pH value of 7.1 su in VIN-2A. Field conductivity values
average 1,092 umhos/com in VIN-2A. As previously noted, there are no laboratory
groundwater quality data for VIN-2A.
3.10 Gold Run
Current Conditions
The Gold Run drainage and the MLE permit boundary are shown on Figure 3.1. Gold
Run is asouthwest-oriented, dry to ephemeral drainage that crosses the diatreme-
granite boundary. Gold Run joins the Cripple Creek drainage approximately one mile
southwest of where State Highway 67 crosses the drainage. Historical mine features
within the Gold Run drainage include: Nichols mine, CK and N mines, Henry Adney
mine, Old Gold mine, EI Paso mine, Lonacioning mine, Mary Nevins mine, and the
Banner mine.
There are no Cresson Project mine disturbances within the Gold Run drainage. No new
disturbance in the Gold Run drainage is proposed in this application.
Surface Water
Surface water conditions in the Gold Run drainage are not assessed due to the absence
of surface water flows.
•
2736 Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Wafer Management Consultants
