R
Applegate Group, Inc.
October 17, 2006
Page 2
sand, which extended to the explored depth of 4 feet. The pit excavated on the
Reservoir 2 side slope encountered approximately 2 feet of saturated lean clay with
sand overlying claystone bedrock, which extended to the explored depth of 4 feet.
Laboratory Testing: Selected samples from the pits were returned to our laboratory
for testing. Testing included grain size analysis (gradation and hydrometer
analyses), Atterberg Limits, standard Proctor moisture-density relationships, falling
head permeability, consolidated-undrained (CU) triaxial shear strength testing,
pinhole and crumb dispersion testing. The triaxial shear strength and permeability
testing was performed by Knight Piesold on samples compacted to approximately
95% of the maximum standard Proctor density near the optimum moisture content.
An interpretation of total and effective shear strength, based on stress path analysis
methods was performed by Knight Piesold. Results of the testing are summarized
herein and test results are presented in the attached appendix to this letter.
Pit 1 @ depth 0 to 2 feet
Unified Classification Silty, clayey sand
Gravel (%) 2
Sand (%) 57
Passing No. 200 Sieve 1%) 41
ASTM D 698 Maximum Dry Density (pcf) 107.7
ASTM D 698 Optimum Moisture Content 1%) 16.1
Liquid Limit 1%1 25
Plastic Index (%) 7
Pinhole Dispersion @ 95% maximum density Non-dispersive
Crumb Dispersion Grade 2, Intermediate
Permeability @ 95% maximum density (cm/sec) 9.6E-05
Cohesion-Total (C) ksf 0.14*/0.14**
Cohesion-Effective (C), Effective 0/0*
Angle of Internal Friction (0)-Total, degrees 21.8*/20.4**
Angle of Internal Friction (fd)-Effective, degrees 34.8*/29.7**
Tan (0), Total 0.4*/0.37**
Tan (0), Effective 0.7*/0.57**
* Based on Mohr's circle method; **Based on Stress path method
Pit 1 @ depth 2 to 4 feet
Unified Classification Gravel with Sand
Gravel (%- 54
Sand (%) 36
Passing No. 200 Sieve (%) 10
Liquid Limit (%) NV
Plastic Index (%- NP
Kumar & Associates, Inc.
