We previously submitted partial results of
laboratory testing in a letter prepared under our Project No. 06-3-130, dated
September 1 1, 2006. The results of the sampling and laboratory testing are
presented herein.
Proposed Construction: The Hokestra Reservoir project will consist of reconfiguring
and lining of an existing reservoir (Reservoir 2) formed by extraction of aggregates.
The reservoir is located directly south of St. Vrain Creek, east of the east I-25
frontage road. It is desired to obtain lining materials from sources adjacent to
Reservoir 2 and from a proposed reservoir area east of Reservoir 2, which will be
mined in the future.
Site Conditions: Reservoir 2 had been dewatered at the time of our site visit on
August 14, 2006. Observation of the reservoir bottom indicated varied conditions,
mostly soils remaining following mining. The majority of the soils observed
appeared to be saturated. Reservoir 2 appears to be on the order of 10 to 15 feet
deep. The proposed borrow area to the east of Reservoir 2 is relatively flat with a
gentle slope down to the north. Existing commercial buildings are located to the
south of the reservoir.
Field Sampling: Samples of potential liner materials were obtained from three
locations, two at the future reservoir site east of Reservoir 2 and one within
Reservoir 2. Samples were obtained by excavating shallow test pits with a
backhoP. Test Pit 1 was excavated in the southwest part of the unmined area east
of Reservoir 2 and Test Pit 2 was excavated at the central part of the unmined area.
The third pit was excavated on the reservoir sideslope at the southeast corner of
Reservoir 2. This location is referred to as Reservoir #2 on the test reports. Test
Pits 1 and 2 encountered approximately 2 feet of clayey sand overlying gravel with
