PKYSIC'AL C7IARACTERISTICS <br />1. Phusi raphic Features <br />Topography is ridges, hog-backs, mesas, and steep slopes. Slope is <br />often east facing but can be in any directic~.n. Slope varies from <br />nearly level to 45 percent. Elevation ranges from 5,200 to 7,000 <br />feet (1,585 to 2,234 meters). <br />?. Climatic Features <br />a. Precipitation averages I3 to I7 inches (35--43 cm) annually t+ith <br />fluctuations from year to year. From 65 to 70 percent of the. <br />precipitation f s received between Hay anal' October. <br />A typical average precipitation pattern follows: <br />Ja n Feb March April May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Diec <br />.42 .58 .9? 1.64 2.14 1.82 2.4? 2.16 1.46 .94 .64 .48 <br />b. Average annual temperature is approximately 49° F (9.4° c). <br />Length of the frost free period averages 220 to 150 days and <br />occurs from the middle of May till the end of September. Fligh <br />intensity summer storms followed by hot dry periods ate common. <br />,3. Native (Climax Potential) Vegetation <br />a. The potential plant comrttt~nity is about 70 to 80 percent grasses, <br />IO to 20 percent (orbs, and IS to 30 percent shrubs and trees. <br />This site gives a browse type vegetation appearance. True <br />Mountain mahogany, big bluestem, little bluestem, sideoats <br />grama, Bellow Indiangrass, and Griffith wheatgrass are the <br />dominant plants in the potential plant community. <br />Needleardthread, mountain mutely, Sandberg bluegrass., blue grama, <br />Jurygrass, and Indian ricegrass are also present. Numerous <br />forbs and other shrubs are present in small amounts. Pinyon <br />pine, Rocky Mountain Juniper, and ponderosa pine are also found <br />on this site in small amounts. <br />P ~g <br />
