Ranney,Walker to McArdle,Nelson
April 5, 2000
Thickness of Gravel Wearing Surface. A question was asked about the 4.0" crushed rock note on
Drawing 43 and the written specification (Wearing Surface, page 7) of 6". The wearing surface is
to be a minimum of 6"thick.
Width of Roadway. A question was asked about the width of the roadway.
Suggested Response: In general, the width of the roadway is 12 feet. The entire width is to
receive a gravel wearing surface. Between stations 1+60 and 3+20 (see Drawing 4), the width of
the roadway is 14 feet, still a 12-foot wide gravel wearing surface. Related to this requirement,
the exact location of the begin and end of the two 150-foot guard rails will be determined in the
field with the project manager(or representative), but within the 14-foot-wide section of the
road.
Cleaning of Riprap. A question was asked if the riprap needed to washed (cleaned of grout).
Suggested Response: No. Although care is requested to keep exposed riprap clean as practical,
cleaning of riprap of grout spill, cover or splatter is not required.
Alternate Borrow Areas: not addressed in this memorandum. The decision was made not to use
the existing roadway as a source of borrow. As a fall-back position, the existing specifications
for the borrow area up the valley are adequate.
Conversion of the Drainage Feature Repair. This item is to be converted to a time and materials
item rather than a bid item. Slopes might be constructed at 2 horizontal to 1 vertical in-lieu-of 3
horizontal to 1 vertical. If there is enough money left, recommend a fabric liner and riprap (2-
foot diameter) be placed to armor the off-slope drainage to a V-section of 4 feet deep.
Another Time and Materials Item. Pushing of any boulders in the drainage below the culvert
down to buttress the lower drop structure would be a good added item.
Files: GEC support
C:\WPDOCS\gecprebidconf.sup.doc
