TREE SEEDLING PLANTING
1) Trees will have a moist root system maintained prior to planting. Trees will be stored
in a cool shady spot until planting.
2) Trees will be planted at a correct depth. Refer to the "old soil line" of the seedling to
determine the correct depth. Shrubs will be placed in a bucket of polymer/water mix
(polymer supplied by the STATE). Holes will be hand dug to be deep enough to allow
roots to go into the soil straight and wide enough so that roots are not curled upward.
Generally, make the hole 3" wider and 3" deeper than needed.
3) Polymer (supplied by the STATE) will be mixed one cup dry material in 6 gallons of
water. When material is fully wetted, put 1 - 1 1 /2 cups wet material in the backfill
around the plant and mix it evenly throughout the backfill.
4) Soil from the bottom to the top of the hole will be firmly packed so no air pockets exist
being careful not to scar the seedling stem. This will be accomplished by filling each
hole half full of soil, packing it, watering, letting the water soak in and finishing filling
the hole with soil, packing and watering again.
5) Loose soil will be added on top as mulch. A 3 - 4 " basin will be constructed for each
planted tree to act as a collection saucer for retaining water.
6) Each tree will be watered after planting. After completion of planting all trees, all trees
will be watered a second time.
13
