a good cover of wheat, orchard, brome, and rye grasses. Yellow sweet clover was especially abundant
throughout the site, as it is elsewhere in western Colorado this year.
Weeds were rare on the 2006 reclamation(the majority of the site)with only a few thistle. A thistle
infestation is developing in a small area of near the entrance gate. The operator will need to spray this
area if this area was disturbed by the mining operation.
Technical Revision 15 was approved in January 2008 allowing removal of the two ponds, with the
stipulation that the operator first submit in a Minor Revision quantitative data that supports the USLE
analysis provided in TR-15. The data are to be collected in Summer 2008. In anticipation of the submittal
of these data, special attention was given during this inspection to visually estimating ground cover in
disturbed areas. Live standing cover provided by vegetation (stems in contact with the ground and
canopy)appeared to exceed 50%in all areas, except the Storage Yard Area which was estimated to exceed
30%. Vegetative litter, rock, and in-ground plant root mass appeared to provide at least an additional 20%
of cover in all areas. There were a few areas of less than Y. acre where vegetative cover was either
significantly less than or greater than 50%.
Photo 1 - Thistle near entrance gate.
5
