III: Project Location
Please attach a photocopy of USGS Quad. clearly showing the project location. The Quad. should be clearly labeled with
the Principal Meridian, Township, Range, Section(s), Quad. map name, and date. Please do not reduce or enlarge the
photocopy.
14. Description: The general study area begins approximately five miles southeast of Hayden and ends around
two miles north of the Twentymile Coal Company's mine headquarters. The core holes are scattered along
the Twentymile Road (CR27) and south of the Seneca Mine.
15. Legal Location: Quad. Total number of acres surveyed: 2.07
17. Comments:
IV. ENVIRONMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: North of the Hillsberry and Williams Fork Mountains, and west of
Twentymile Park. The well locations are situated along both east and west sides of Grassy Creek. This is
a north-flowing tributary of the Yampa River. The western holes are generally in open rolling grassland
which has been revegetated during a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The eastern holes are in terrain
that is steeper and more dissected by numerous ridges and drainages.
Current Land Use: Livestock grazing, mining and hunting.
19. Flora: To the east the vegetation is a mix of sagebrush meadows with pockets of scrub oak, mountain
mahogany, serviceberry and chokecherry bushes. Grasses and forbs fill in between the shrubs. The western
locations are in open rolling grassland dominated by revegetated (CRP) wheat grasses.
20. Soils/Geology: Medium brown silty clay overlying Cretaceous age sedimentary rocks. Two formations
are found here: the Williams Formation consisting of sandstone, shale and major coal, and to a lesser extent
the Iles Formation which is sandstone and shale with coal beds in the upper half of the formation.
21. Ground Visibility: Visibility was limited and varied from 10% to 40% due to the thick vegetation cover.
There were areas which afforded views of the ground surface via game/livestock trails, rodent backdirt piles
and two-track roads.
22. Previous Survey Activity
In the project area: OAHP Compass indicates that 12 cultural studies have occurred within the sections
that the core holes are located. These include: High Plains Consultants, Cow Camp U G Drill Sites and
Access Roads (Miles & Evans 1983); Western Historical Studies (Mehls, Steven & Carol 1991) for a large
coal mining survey in Routt and Moffat Counties; Metcalf Archaeological Consultants: Five Surface Water
Monitoring Flumes (Rood 1990); Nine Groundwater Monitoring Wells (Rood 1990); Addendum - Nine
