?e

For larger plants the best treatment is to cut the plant at the ground and treat the fresh
cut stump with Garlan 4 or Pathfinder within 10 minutes or so. Then gather, pile up,
and burn the cuttings or mulch them. Fall or winter is the best time for this treatment.
There are experiments with the Chinese Leaf Beetle, sponsored by USDA, to see how
these bugs might control Tamarisk. Goats will eat Tamarisk and Imapweed. This
method usually requires fencing the area, moving the fence from time to time, providing
water for the goats, and in certain cases herd dogs for goat control.
Russian Olives are best handled by cutting the tree down and treating the stump similar
to Tamarisk. Resprouts need to be treated as well. Some spraying is done on smaller
plants.
In conclusion, United Companies is committed to control or noxious weeds at all United
locations. Usually it's a case of your neighbors not being as committed to control as
you are - making control on company land harder. We monitor the success of weed
control a minimum of three times a year. Tamarisk and Russian Olive treatment results
will be especially monitored to determine what method and what chemical is most
effective.
Brent Kerr
United Co.
