III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Eagle Mines C-1981-044
21 May 2008 ez
Pg2/3
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): - Sediment Ponds 9-P2 and 9-P3 are a series of ponds on
the east side of the site for old, reclaimed areas. Pond 9-P2 contained some water
and Pond 9-P3 was dry (only Pond 9-P3 is an NPDES discharge point). Both pond
embankments were well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems were noted on either pond embankment at the
time of the inspection. There is a belt-lined ditch that connects the two ponds. This
ditch appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection.
- Sediment Ponds SH-PI and SH-P2, by the old farm shop, were both dry at the time of
the inspection. Both embankments were well vegetated and appeared to be
stable. No erosional problems were noted on either pond embankment at the time
of the inspection.
- Sediment Pond 5A-P 1, just below the 5A portals, contained a small amount of water
at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was well vegetated and
appeared to be stable. No erosional problems were noted on the pond
embankment at the time of the inspection. The ditch from the 100,000 gallon water
tank above the portal bench appeared to be stable as well.
- Sediment Ponds 9-P 1 and 9-P6, by the newly permitted solid waste disposal area,
were both dry at the time of the inspection. These ponds collect the runoff from the
solid waste disposal area and the adjacent refuse pile. Both pond embankments
were well vegetated and appeared to be stable. No erosional problems were noted
on either pond embankment at the time of the inspection.
- Sediment Pond HR-P-1 b (and its presettling cell HR-P-1 a) contained a small amount
of water at the time of the inspection. Discharge from this pond is through a gated
valve, which was closed at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was
well vegetated and appeared to be stable. No erosional problems were noted on
the pond embankment at the time of the inspection.
Backfilling and Grading: - The backfilled #4 portal area appeared to be stable at the
time of the inspection. There was no noticeable settling and there were no erosional
problems.
- The solid waste disposal area where several demolished buildings have been buried
has been backfilled. The area was well graded and there was no settling in the
backfill. This area was just backfilled so it will be watched closely. It appears that less
than half of the permitted area has been disturbed.
Processing Waste: - The refuse pile by the solid waste disposal area was well graded
and appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. The pile appears to have
positive drainage and there was no water pooling on the surface of the pile. There
were no erosional problems noted at the time of the inspection.
Support Facilities: - The 5A portal area appeared to be in good condition at the time
of the inspection. No problems were noted.
- The scoria pit area was stable at the time of the inspection.
