The inventoried area is a proposed road alignment
corridor, approximately a mile in length, below the summit of Huntsman
Ridge, between 11,300 feet and 11,600 feet in elevation. A subalpine
spruce-meadow vegetation type characterized by mostly open meadow areas
interspersed with small clusters of Engelmann spruce was identified. The
corridor sampled was approximately 200 feet either side of the centerline
alignment.
Rock Tunnel Area. The inventoried area consists of about eleven acres of
aspen. Elevation ranges from about 9,450 feet to about 9,650 feet. The
area occurs on a gently sloping bench above the Henderson Creek flood-
plain. Mid-Continent has proposed to disturb a portion of this area for a
ventilation tunneL
METHODS
Vegetation Mapping. Vegetation types at all three inventory sites were
distinguished primarily by the visually dominant overstory vegetation. Only
one site, the Sutey property, was comprised of more than one vegetation
type. Each vegetation type at each inventory site was sampled for
vegetation cover by species and herbaceous production by life form. All
types except the meadow type at the Sutey property were also sampled for
woody plant density.
Vegetation Cover. Vegetation cover was measured along line-point
transects. Transect sites were randomly located on a map of the study area
before sampling began. At each transect location, a 50-foot tape was
stretched parallel to the ground between two metal stakes. At each
