The work was conducted by Intermountain Soils, Inc.
under contract to Mid-Continent Resources, Inc., operator of the mine. The
inventories are intended to satisfy certain regulatory requirements of the
Colorado Division of Mined Land Reclamation (the Division), as well as to
provide resource information useful in the reclamation planning process.
Vegetation inventories were conducted in three separate areas, each
proposed for future development by Mid-Continent. Each area is separately
described below. In addition, a soils inventory was conducted for one of the
areas, a road alignment corridor leading to a proposed gas well field.
Finally, a vegetation reference area was established for one of the
vegetation types at one inventory area (Sutey property site). This site has
been proposed as a location for a coal processing waste disposal facility.
Descriptions of the three inventoried areas are as follows.
Sutey Property. The inventoried area is approximately 70 acres. The
elevation of the area ranges from about 8,100 feet to about 8,650 feet.
Topography is varied and includes steep west and south-facing slopes of
shale-derived soils where a mountain shrub vegetation type predominates,
relatively level areas of deeper soils underlying a meadow type, and steep to
nearly level areas of aspen.
