INTRODUCTION
r The current coal mining operations of Mid-Continent Resources '
Coal Basin project is located almost entirely in T.10S. , R.89W. ,
in Pitkin County, Colorado. The mining operation is located in
a structural basin drained by Coal Creek into the Crystal River.
The proposed expansion of the coal mining operation will be to
the west, under the divide of Coal Creek and under National Forest
Service land. The western divide of Coal Creek is Huntsman Ridge
and is the Pitkin County-Gunnison County line. The proposed ex-
pansion of the Mid-Continent Resources will, therefore, extend
into a separate watershed, under Forest Service lands and into
Gunnison County.
The Mid-Continent Coal Basin mine affected area is considered
to be the federal lease area, the area currently being mined,
and the coal preparation plant, along with the roadways connecting
these areas . Conversation with Mr. Dan Kimball. of the Office
of Surface Mining established that the watershed of the mine
lease area is generally considered an effective adjacent area.
For the Coal Basin Mine, the adjacent area is considered as the
Coal Creek watershed on the east and the portions of the Clear
._ Fork and the East Muddy Creek on the west that actually drain
the coal lease area.
i
