STRATIGRAPHY OF COAL BASIN MINE AND ADJACENT AREA
The youngest units in the Coal Basin adjacent area are the
• unconsolidated Quaternary alluvial deposits in Coal Creek and
its related tributaries and in the East Muddy Creek and its
related tributaries. Other Quaternary alluvial deposits
- consist of landslide deposits and Pleistocene gravel deposits
on the hillslopes west and east of Huntsman Ridge (Tweto, 1978) .
The nonresistant Mancos shale within Coal Basin and the dip
slope conditions on the west and south of Huntsman Ridge are
unstable and prone to movement . This landsliding _is related
to a number of factors, one being saturation from snowmelt
during spring months .
The youngest bedrock unit within the Coal Basin adjacent area
is the Tertiary Wasatch - Ohio Creek conglomerate, outcropping
-, on the lower slopes, west of Huntsman Ridge and down slope
from the Coal Basin mine lease area (Tweto, 1978) . The Ohio
Creek conglomerate is approximately 400 feet thick and consists
of sandstones and conglomerates ; the Wasatch formation has
a maximum thickness of 5 , 800 feet and consists of interbedded
claystone, siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate with some
lignites near the base (Tweto, 19.78) .
Underlying the Wasatch - Ohio Creek conglomerate is the
Mesaverde formation or group, depending upon the terminology
used. Generally, north of the Colorado River, the Mesaverde is
-. referred to as a group and consists of the Williams Fork and
•
6
