The Coal Basin anticline is restricted in outcrop to the
Mancos shale and younger units . To the east of the anticline
• the units older than the Cretaceous Mancos shale outcrop at the
southern end of the Grand Hogback and are steeply dipping to
the west . A thrust fault, _unrelated to the Coal Basin mining
area, brings these older units up over the younger Mancos shale
immediately south of Coal Creek (Full, 1972 ; Tweto, 1978) .
