several intermittent tributaries to Coal Creek. This location
• is protected from the fury of winter storms but as such is
subject to avalanches from snow accumulation at the higher
elevations.
The slope is variable from 1 to 300, dipping primarily
to the east. Soils are medium to dark brown fine sandy loams
characteristic of woodland lithosols and podsols. They have
been formed from parent material consisting of sandstone and
shale talus, coal, and granitic river cobbles. Consequently,
they vary in structure, depth, color, and texture over short
distances. Most are shallow, stoney, and without definable
profile development.
Vegetation cover is variable from 20 to 60% and is composed
primarily of douglas fir and aspen with mountain mahogany, pussy
willow, and wild strawberry understory along with numerous flow-
ering forbs, and grasses. Snow cover is still present along the
forested north facing slopes. Precipitation is primarily in
the form of snow, July and August being the only snow-free months.
•
Field Methodology: The entire site covers approximately 40
acres. Each structure/foundation was inspected and notes taken
on the preservation, architecture, and associated artifacts in
association. Photographs and measurements of the structures
were taken where enough remained to permit such documentation.
Diagnostic artifacts were photographed and complete specimens
were collected and placed in the custody of Mr. Doug Bowman,
Environmental Coordinator for Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. , and
board member of the Redstone Historical Society. Background
research included an examination of historical references in the
Gordon Cooper Library in Carbondale, Colorado and the Glenwood
Springs Municipal Library, as well as information provided by
Doug Bowman and Mid-Continent Resources, Inc.
History of Coal Basin: Prior to 1881 the Crystal River Valley
was part of the territory claimed by the Utes . In 1881, C. D.
2
