INITIAL SURVEY AND RECORDING <br /> • OF THE COAL, BASIN TOWNSITE <br /> INTRODUCTION <br /> On December 6 , 1976 , Powers Elevation, Heritage Division <br /> was contracted by Mr. George Wear, Director of Special Projects <br /> for Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. for performance of a Phase I <br /> records inventory of the Coal Basin Townsite, as requested by <br /> the Office of Surface Mining. On December 10,1979 , an estimate <br /> was prepared based on two persons spending two days in site <br /> recordation, and one person spending three days compiling <br /> documents and records . <br /> On June 12-17, 1980, Brian O'Neil conducted an initial <br /> field investigation and compilation of documents and records <br /> according to the requirements of applicable historic preservation <br /> laws. <br /> Files Search: A file search conducted by the Colorado Historical <br /> Society and the Office of the State Archaeologist indicated that <br /> there were no known archaeological and/or historical/architectural <br /> resources previously recorded in the study area. <br /> Map Reference: Placita, Colorado Quad. , 7 .5 ' , 1963 . <br /> Location/Description: The Coal Basin Townsite is located in <br /> Pitkin County, Colorado; T10S, R89W, of the 6th PM in the SE; <br /> of the NWQ and the NE; of the SWa of Section 5 at an elevation <br /> of 9, 450 ft. (2880. 4m) . The land is privately owned by Mid- <br /> Continent Resources, Inc. <br /> Environment: The townsite is situated in Coal Basin which forms <br /> the head waters of Coal Creek. It is bounded on the south, west, <br /> and north by several large ridges, the town and mine being <br /> • located on the eastern slope of the West Elk Mountains along <br />
