COAL BASIN MINE PERMIT APPLICATION <br /> MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES , INC . <br /> CARBONDALE, COLORADO <br /> CHAPTER III <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES INFORMATION <br /> A. Site Description and Land Use Information <br /> 1 . Environmental resources identification <br /> Environmental resources of the permit , mine plan <br /> and adjacent areas include scenery , timber , grazing , wildlife <br /> and water . All surface facilities are located within Coal <br /> Basin, a northwest trending anticline of 26 square miles in <br /> size . Underground workings extend from the portal areas in <br /> Coal Basin beneath Huntsman Ridge , and underlie the west and <br /> • south slopes of Huntsman Ridge. Construction of all surface <br /> facilities pre-dates the application, and no further surface <br /> disturbance is anticipated . <br /> The applicant , Mid-Continent Resources , Inc . , has <br /> mined in Coal Basin since 1956 . A prior mining operation <br /> was developed by the Colorado Fuel & Iron Co . in 1900 , but <br /> ended in 1909 . Mid-Continent is unrelated to the Colorado <br /> Fuel & Iron Co. Areas of the original surface disturbance , <br /> including a portion of the railroad roadbed and the mine <br /> entry , are used by Mid-Continent in the present-day operation. <br /> Mid-Continent has distinguished , in responding to <br /> the requirement of 2 . 04 . 3 (1) for a listing of the "existing , <br /> premining environmental resources , between the "premining" <br /> 1 <br />
