ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES INFORMATION
A. Site Description and Land Use Information
1 . Environmental resources identification
Environmental resources of the permit , mine plan
and adjacent areas include scenery , timber , grazing , wildlife
and water . All surface facilities are located within Coal
Basin, a northwest trending anticline of 26 square miles in
size . Underground workings extend from the portal areas in
Coal Basin beneath Huntsman Ridge , and underlie the west and
• south slopes of Huntsman Ridge. Construction of all surface
facilities pre-dates the application, and no further surface
disturbance is anticipated .
The applicant , Mid-Continent Resources , Inc . , has
mined in Coal Basin since 1956 . A prior mining operation
was developed by the Colorado Fuel & Iron Co . in 1900 , but
ended in 1909 . Mid-Continent is unrelated to the Colorado
Fuel & Iron Co. Areas of the original surface disturbance ,
including a portion of the railroad roadbed and the mine
entry , are used by Mid-Continent in the present-day operation.
Mid-Continent has distinguished , in responding to
the requirement of 2 . 04 . 3 (1) for a listing of the "existing ,
premining environmental resources , between the "premining"
