( MORRISON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
I
Another disadvantage of this second site is that due to longer trans-
portation distance from the coal washing plant, a larger cost will be in-
volved, compared to the cross-ridge site.
1 .6 REFUSE & FOUNDATION MATERIALS SAMPLING AND TESTING
This report section documents the geotechnical investigation under-
taken to determine the physical characteristics of the refuse material at
the Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Co. 's Coal Basin coal preparation facility.
The field investigation and laboratory testing were authorized under Con-
tract Change Notice No. 1 on June 21 , 1977. Drilling and sampling were
performed by Engineering Testing Laboratories of Phoenix, Arizona, under
the supervision of a M-K geotechnical engineer. The field work was done
in July, 1977, and subsequently the samples were shipped to the labora-
tories of Washler and Associates , in Palo Alto, California, on the last
week of August, 1977. The laboratory testing program was formulated by
M-K engineers and was finalized after a visit to the office of Wahler and
Assoc. and consultation with their engineers. The results of this labor-
atory tests were presented in a report by Wahler and Assoc. on October,
1977 A few additional tests were performed at M-K's request and the
results were sent to M-K on December 6, 1977. This full report document
was then transmitted to Mid-Continent on December 22, 1977.
1 .6.1 Drilling and Sampling
The objects of the field investigation were as follows:
o To obtain "disturbed" and "undisturbed" samples
of the refuse and foundation material .
To determine the field density of the refuse material
r•
 Iq- Cof'✓r 1ii's rP,foT 1-14/
II
