Chapter II <br />The primary buildings of the mine operation form a central complex around the <br />• parking lot. The major surface facilities, such as roads and conveyor lines, extend <br />from the central complex area to the portals. Access to the mining operation is <br />through the central complex area. (Exhibit II-B-7). <br />On the west side of the parking, lot are the preparations plant and dryers, storage <br />and blending bins, and truck load-out. <br />Northwest of the parking lot, beyond the preparations plant area, is the Sutey Coal <br />Refuse Disposal Area. <br />South of the parking lot are two buildings, which contain (1) the bathhouse and <br />offices and (2) classrooms, engineering section and ambulance garage. <br />Southwest of the parking lot are the main and upper warehouses. Near the <br />warehouse facility is the electric power sub-station. <br />North of the parking lot is a maintenance shop/garage. <br />(2) Portals. <br />The road system and utility corridors connect the portal areas to the central <br />complex. <br />There are mine portals and yard area at the Adit/Rock Tunnel, and at Main Entries <br />#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5. The lamphouse at the Adit/Rock Tunnel also serves as an <br />office facility. Lamphouses, and facilities for the hoists and ventilation system are <br />the primary surface buildings at the main entry portals. In addition, the Briedan <br />plant is situated at the Entry #1 portal area. <br />(3) List of Buildings and Structures. <br />Appendix II-B-6, Surface Buildings and Structures, lists the surface buildings and <br />structures of the Coal Basin mining operations and the purpose, type of structure, <br />size and date of construction or installation of each. The buildings and structures <br />are grouped by general location in the permit area. Locations are indicated on the <br />maps of Ex. II-B-2 a through e. Impoundments, drainage system, refuse facility, etc. <br />are separately discussed later in this chapter. <br />b. Road System -Haul Roads. <br />(1) Background/Development <br />of Haul Roads. <br />In developing the mining operation, Mid-Continent constructed a 13.7 mile long road <br />system utilized for hauling coal from the portals to the preparation plant area (Exhibit <br />.
