Chapter II
(December, 1987) these faces are on stand-by status, and the lateral extensions
have not yet been made. If production is required from these faces prior to the
extension of the Adit/Rock Tunnel, coal will be transported as in years past, namely
out through the Main Entry, to the portal, then trucked down the road to the raw
coal storage area. After the Adit/Rock Tunnel extensions are made to these faces,
of course, the coal will be transported to the surface through the Adit/Rock Tunnel.
In addition, future plans are to extend the Adit/Rock Tunnel further west, opening a
portal area on the other, western side, of Huntsman's Ridge. The timetable for this
development depends upon economic factors relating, principally, to market
demand and price. Because of uncertainty relating to these market factors, specific
dates have not yet been determined.
The permit area encompasses the surface above such anticipated underground
entries. The surface disturbance which would be created by extension of the
Adit/Rock Tunnel and opening of a portal on the west side of Huntsman's Ridge has
not been permitted. Mid-Continent will apply for the necessary permit approvals
when a firm timetable has been developed.
d. Stratum to be Affected.
Mining operations will be conducted in the two commercially minable coal seams of
the Mesaverde group located in Coal Basin. These seams are the Coal Basin seam
(B-bed); and the Dutch Creek seam (Middle bed). The Middle Bed overlies the B
Bed stratigraphically by about 450 feet. The coal seams are believed to be
continuous, except for some faulting, within the mine plan area.
The multi-lift mining technique will extract coal from the A-bed, which is directly
beneath the B-bed.
3. Mine Facilities
a. Buildings and Structures.
Buildings and structures, except for two explosive storage block houses and several
sediment ponds are located on land which Mid-Continent owns. Parts of the road
system and powerline right-of-ways cross lands managed by the U.S. Forest
Service.
(1) Central Complex/Prep. Plant Area

15
