Total average vegetation cover, for first hits, was 43.5 percent. Total average vegetation cover,
• for all hits, was 45.6 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil., and rock each had 0.7, 27.7, 26.8,
and 1.3 percent cover, respectively (first hits). Average species density was 30.5 species per 100
sq.m.
Production
(Table 2)
Total average production was 1302.6 Ibs per acre. Native perennial cool season grasses
contributed the most with an average production of 569.2 Ibs per acre (approximately 44%).
Introduced annual and biennial forbs, native perennial forbs, introduced perennial cool season -
grasses, and introduced perennial forbs contributed moderate amounts (187.4, 185.6, 164.2,
123.1 Ibs per acre, respectively).
Woody Plant Density
(Table 3)
Total average density of woody plants was 263.0 stems per acre, composed entirely of native
shrubs. Mountain snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundifolius) and big sagebrush (Seriphidium
tridentatum) were the dominant species contributing 91.9 and 80.9 stems per acre, respectively.
• Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus),
Douglas rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus), chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp.
melanocarpa) and bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) were also present, each with less than 45
stems per acre.
2005 RECLAIMED AREA
(Photographs 9-16)
Cover
(Table 4)
Introduced annual and biennial forbs were the predominant lifeform observed in the 2005
Reclaimed Area, contributing 18.9 percent toward total all-hit vegetation cover. Of this,
pennycress (Th/aspi arvense) and devil's shoestrings (Po/ygonum arenastrum) contributed 6.0
and 5.9 percent toward total vegetation all-hit cover, respectively. Native perennial cool season
grasses were the second most encountered lifeform with 8.4 percent total all-hit vegetation cover.
Within this group, mountain brome (Ceratochloa polyantha) and slender wheatgrass (Elymus
trachycaulus), were most common, having 4.2 and 2.1 percent total vegetation all-hit cover,
respectively. Introduced annual grasses (4.1 total all-hit vegetation cover) were the third most
. common lifeforms with Japanese brome (Bromus japonicas) comprising the majority with 3.4
percent total vegetation all-hit cover.
7
