• Shrub. Densi .The shrub density counts obtained from the 50 belt transects taken in this area
are sur°nmarized in Table 11,Juniper-Grassland Reference Area -Shrub Density. The average
shrub ~ iensity was determined to equal 6.86 shrubs per 100 m2 or 299.5 shrubs per acre.
Skunkl~bush Sumac (Rhos trilobata) and Rubber Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus) were
the mast commonly encountered shrubs.
The la,ations of the 50 shrub density transects sampled on this site are shown on Map 3C,
Juniper-Grassland Reference Area -Vegetation Transect Location Map. Copies of the individual
field d; its sheets for the woody plant density sampling of this site are found in Appendix I -
Copies ofJuniper-Grassland Reference Area -Shrub Density Field Data Sheets. Examination of
the sample adequacy calculations in Table 2, Northfield Mine Sample Adequacy Calculations,
reveals the number of samples required to describe the shrub density on this area at the 90
percent: confidence interval was 41.9 transects.
S~ecie~,; Diversity. The percent relative composition or cover values in Table 9, Juniper-
GrasslF~nd Reference Area -Plant Cover, document that there were only three plants having a
relative cover value greater than five percent, Blue Grains, Red Threeawn and Broome
Snakev~reed. These three dominant plants had composition values of 38.71, 17.38 and 6.25
percent respectively.
DISTURBED .REFERENCE AREA
Plant (,'over. The results obtained from the sampling of the 15 plant cover transects on this
• reclaimed site are presented in Table 12, Disturbed Reference Area -Plant Cover. Total plant
cover o~n this site averaged 41.20 percent and litter cover averaged 35.93 percent (Table 12,
Disturbed Reference Area -Plant Cover).
Perenni a1 grasses dominated this site, contributing 14.27 percent of the total plant cover or 34.63
percent of the total relative cover found on this area. Perennial forbs contributed 11.87 percent
of the tc-ta1 plant cover or 28.80 percent of the total relative cover found on this site. Woody
plants contributed 7.20 percent of the total plant cover or 17.48 percent of the total relative cover
found o n this site. Annuals and biennials contributed 4.67 percent of the total plant cover or
11.33 percent of the total relative cover found on this site. Succulents contributed 3.20 percent
of the total plant cover or 7.77 percent of the total relative cover found on this site.
Bushy l:;riogonum (Eriogonum eff.) was the dominant plant growing on this site and contributed
8.07 percent of the total plant cover or 19.58 percent of the total relative cover found on this site.
Skunkb~ ash Sumac, Blue Grams, Needle and Thread Grass (Stipa comata) and Sand Dropseed
were thE; other most commonly encountered species growing on this site, contributing 12.30,
11.97, 7.77 and 7.61 percent, respectively, of the total relative cover on this area.
The locf~;tions of the 15 cover sampled on the main south block of this reclaimed area are shown
on Map 3D, Disturbed Reference Area -Vegetation Transect Location Map.
