• Junipe:~~ and Cactus would be considered to be invasive species on this site they should not be
consid~.red as possible candidates for calculating the potential species diversity standard.
JUNI)F"'ER-GRASSLAND REFERENCE AREA
Plant I,;over. The results obtained from the sampling of the 15 plant cover transects on this site
resulte~ i in a total plant cover averaging 43.73 percent and litter averaged 26.13 percent (Table 9,
Juniper°-Grassland Reference Area -Plant Cover).
Perennial grasses dominated the seeded vegetation on this site accounting for 25.80 percent of
the tota~~l cover or 59.00 percent of the total relative cover on this site. Woody plants contributed
6.07 percent of the total cover or 13.87 percent of the total relative cover on this site. Perennial
fortis G ~ntributed 5.40 percent of the total cover or 12.35 percent of the total relative cover on
this siU;. Succulents contributed 4.00 percent of the total cover or 9.15 percent of the total
relative covcr on this site. Annuals contributed 2.47 percent of total cover or 5.64 percent of the
total relative cover on this site.
Blue G~.ama was the most commonly encountered species, accounting for 38.71 percent of the
total rellative cover on this site. Red Threeawn, Broom Snakeweed, Storksbill and Candelabra
Cactus were the other dominant species, contributing 17.38, 6.25, 4.87 and 4.87 percent,
respectively, of the total relative cover found on this site.
. The loc~3tions of the 15 cover transects sampled on this site are shown on Map 3C, Juniper-
Gr3ssla~zd Reference Area -Vegetation Transect Location Map. Copies of the individual field
data she°~ts for the plarrt cover sampling of this site are found in Appendix G -Copies of Juniper-
Grassla~id Reference Area -Plant Cover Field Data Sheets. The calculations found in Table 2,
Northfield Mine Sample Adequacy Calculations, document that the number of samples required
to describe this site with respect to total plant cover at the 90 percent confidence interval was
determi~sed to equal 3.2 samples.
Producltion. The results of the 30 production transects on this area are summarized in Table 10,
Juniper-Grassland Reference Area -Production. Forage production on this site averaged 26.32
g/1/4m2 or 939.3 pounds of air-dry forage per acre. Perennial grasses contributed 20.50 g/1/4m2
or 77.85 percent and perennial forts contributed 5.82 g/1/4m2 or 22.1 l percent of the total
herbace~ pus forage production on this area.
The loc~~~iions of the 30 production transects sampled on this site are shown on Map 3C, Juniper-
Gr3sslar~d Reference Area -Vegetation Transect Location Map. Copies of the individual field
data she~rts for the forage production sampling of this site are found in Appendix H -Copies of
Juniper-Grassland Reference Area -Production Field Data Sheets. The sample adequacy
calculations in Table 2, Northfield Mine Sample Adequacy Calculations, document that the
number ~~f production transects required to characterize this site at the 90 percent confidence
interval vas 21.7.
• 8
