Official Series Description - F~T CULLING Serves <br />rage ~ or 4 <br />• <br />Mean summer soil temperature: 15 to 22 degrees C. (59 to 72 degrees F.) <br />Depth to the base of the Bt: 28 to 76 centimeters (11 to 30 inches) <br />Depth to calcareous material: 20 to 51 centimeters (8 to 20 inches) <br />Organic carbon upper 38 centimeters (15 inches): ranges from .6 to 2 percent (weighted average .8 <br />percent) <br />Average sand/clay ratio: 1 to 3 <br />Base saturation: 90 to 100 percent <br />Rock fragments: 0 to 15 percent, (typically less than 5 percent) <br />Moisture control section: not dry in all part for more than I/Z of the time that the soil temperature is <br />above 5 degrees C. (41 degrees F.) (moist in some or all parts during May and June) <br />Moisture control section: not dry for 45 consecutive days following July 15. <br />A horizon: <br />Hue: lOYR or 2.SY <br />Value: 5 to 7, 3 to 5 moist <br />Chroma: 2 or 3 <br />When the value of the surface horizon is as dark as 5 dry and 3 moist the horizon must be thin enough so <br />that if the soil is mixed to 7 inches it vaill have an ochric epipedon or it must contain less than 1 percent <br />organic matter. Structure: usually granular but may be weak subangular blocky <br />Firmness: soft or slightly hard <br />Reaction: neutral to slightly alkaline. <br />Bt horizon: <br />Hue: 2.SY to 7.SYR <br />Value: 5 to 7, 4 or 5 moist <br />Chroma: 2 to 4 <br />Texture: loam or clay loam <br />Clay content: 18 to 35 percent <br />Silt content: 20 to SO percent <br />Sand content: 20 to 50 percent (more than 15 percent but less than 35 percent being fine sand or coarser) <br />Structure: prismatic but subangular blocky in some pedons <br />Reaction: neutral or slightly alkaline. <br />Bk or C horizon: <br />Hue: 2. SY or l OYR <br />Value: 6 or 7, 5 or 6 moist <br />Chroma: 2 to 6 <br />Reaction: moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline <br />Calcium carbonate equivalent: 5 to 15 percent <br />Textures: loam or clay loam and less commonly sandy clay loam. <br />COMPETING SERIES: These are the Arnor, Arwite, Augustine, Bigbow, Bosonoak, Carri, Celacy, <br />Celavar, Dalhart, Deekay, Dermala, Elwo , Evpark, Flugle, Gateson, Goesling, Iwela, L~ korly, <br />Nava'ita, Nviack, Oldwolf, Olnest, Orlie, Parkelei, Pinitos, Rauzi, Ribera, Roc butte, Stoneham, <br />Toluca and Waaonhound series. <br />Arnor and Rauzi soils are redder hues and Arnor soils contain 15 to 30 percent rock fragments. <br />Augustine, Dalhart, Goesling, &Pinitos soils have thicker argillic layers with the base of the Bt in <br />excess of 56 centimeters (22 inches). <br />Augustine soils may have a calcic horizon below t02 centimeters (44 inches). <br />Arwite, Deekay and Wagonhound soils are dry for 45 consecutive days in July through September. <br />http://ortho.ftw.nres.usda.gov/cgi-bin/osd/osdname.cgi?-P 1/27/2006 <br />
