RE: Proposed North Field Mine area, Fremont County, Colorado

After our visit to the proposed North Field Mine site on February 2, 2006, I have reviewed the
information you provided, maps, Base Line Report, reseeding mixes, etc.
As you have requested, I offer the following comments regarding post-mining reclamation of
the site to be disturbed. My comments are based on both professional and personal
knowledge of the area since 1976.
1. The extensive plant list included in the Base Line Report (1991) appears well
representative of the site (aside from the error in legal description).
2. Soils -Here attached is a soils map of the site and soils descriptions for the soils most
likely to be disturbed by the surface operations. These are mostly on map unit 36, Fort
Collins loam; map unit 64, Lotaviers-Travessilla complex; and map unit 124, Wann-
Shanta, dry association: Of these soils all but the Wann-Shanta are considered non-
irrigated rangeland soils.
If irrigation water is available, Wann-Shanta soils can be used as irrigated cropland.
However at this site the Wann-Shanta is a narrow strip of land and includes a portion of
the ancient Chandler Creek Channel. Irrigation water is not available, nor are there
favorable prospects to obtain necessary water rights. Chandler Creek is a dry stream
except, during flash rainstorms. The areas low rainfall average 13"/year is not sufficient
for non-irrigated farming.
