MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID#: M-2003-016 PAGE: 2
INSPECTION DATE: 3-14-08 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ACS
The Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS) is currently
reviewing two revisions to the Heit Pit permit. Revision SR-O1 was
submitted to reduce the amount of required bond based on the completed
installation of the slurry wall. Revision TR-04 was submitted to
permit the dewatering sediment trap installed just outside the
northwest corner of the slurry wall. This inspection was conducted to
facilitate review of the revisions and as a general monitoring
inspection. The following areas were inspected.
Main Gate
There is no permit sign posted at the pit access point. See PB-1 on
page four of this report.
Pumping Facilities
A dewatering sump has been excavated in the northwest quadrant of the
pit. A four inch diesel pump removes water from the sump and
discharges to the sediment trap constructed outside the northwest
corner of the slurry wall. Discharge from the sediment trap flows to
Little Dry Creek.
A water supply pond has been excavated into the remaining ground water
inside the slurry wall in the south central area of the pit. This pond
will be used to supply water for washing of aggregate. Since
consumptive use of water is occurring, the Office of the Sate Engineer
is being copied this report.
Sediment Trap - Northwest Corner
A sediment trap for cleaning water pumped from the dewatering sump has
been constructed just outside the northwest corner of the slurry wall.
The trap is located a short distance west of the location previously
approved by DRMS; the location adjustment was made to avoid building
the trap over a gas line. DRMS will add fifteen cubic yards of grading
work and five cubic yards of topsoil work to the estimated reclamation
costs to incorporate a cost for reclaiming the trap into the amount of
required bond.
Perimeter Underdrain
An underdrain has been installed around the south and part of the west
legs of the slurry wall in order to prevent ground water mounding
against the slurry wall. The underdrain was approved by DRMS through
technical revision TR-03. The underdrain discharge is midway along the
west leg of the slurry wall. From the discharge point, underdrain
water will flow overland and through a series of small wetlands to
Little Dry Creek. The underdrain was not flowing at the time of the
inspection.
Structures
When the Heit Pit was permitted by DRMS, there were a number of farm
