The document provides a summary of
a site investigation conducted at the facility after petroleum hydrocarbons, namely diesel, were found in
the subsurface at the site. The hydrocarbons are believed to be present due to the historic use of diesel
fuel as a solvent and degreaser in the facility's maintenance yard operations.
The document states that 13 test pits were excavated at the facility in order to delineate the horizontal
and vertical extent of contamination in the subsurface. ]n addition, four existing wells, MW-1, MW-5,
MW-6, and MW-11, were sampled for petroleum hydrocarbons and diesel range organics. Well 1VIW-1
was found to have the highest levels of petroleum hydrocarbons present. The report inferred ground
water flow to be to the north toward well MW-~.
The document proposes to excavate contaminated soils at the site in accordance with the Department of
Labor and Employment, Division of Oil and Public Safety's guidance Tier 1 risk-based screening levels
for petroleum-contaminated soils. The Division has the following comments regarding the document.
The facility must use the Colorado Soil Evaluation Values table as guidance for cleanup values
for soil at the site. A copy of the table is attached to this letter for your information. The table can
be downloaded at http:iiwww.cdphe.state.co.us'hf~iicse~~.~dC.
2. The document needs to indicate where samples from each test pit ~~~ere obtained (i.e., bottom or
sides of test pity and whether the samples were gn-ab samples or composites.
