In all other years, nesting
information was obtained between 21 April and 6 May.
SANDHILL CRANE ACTIVITY
Although sandhill cranes were documented within the permit area in late April 2007, no
nesting activity was observed during the site visit. Biologists recorded one adult sandhill crane
foraging within reclamation in SE SW Section 12, TSN, R87E on 22 April. Cranes nested
nearby, from 2004 through 2006, at the periphery of a mine reservoir at the south edge of the
permit area in SW SE Section 12. When biologists checked that site for activity on 22 April,
what could have been the foundation of a potential nest (a small hummock of cattail [Typha
-• spp.]) was observed in the same general location as previous years' nests. However, the high
water level at the site had flooded the cattail stands sufficiently as to discourage nesting at that
time. Despite searching other potential nesting sites, no nests or other cranes were observed on
or near the Seneca II permit area in 2007.
•
LITERATURE CITED
Cannon, R.W. and F.L.
