Soils Descriptions
Unit 26
Name Collide complex, 2 to 6 percent slopes
Description This map unit is a complex of very deep, well drained soils on terraces. Elevation is 7,000
[sic] to 7,600 feet. The average annual precipitation is 15 to 17 inches, the average annual
air temperature is 46 to 50 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 100 to 120 days.
This map unit is 45 percent Collide clay loam soil and similar inclusions, 40 percent Collide
cobbly substratum soil and similar inclusions and 15 percent contrasting inclusions.
Contrasting Inclusions
This unit includes ustorthents on hills and escarpments and sideshow soils on alluvial fans.
Vegetation
The ecological site is Loamy Foothills. The dominant vegetation includes 20 percent western
wheatgrass, 20 percent muttongrass ,15 percent big sagebrush, 5 percent bottlebrush
squirreltail, 5 percent rubber rabbitbrush and 5 percent neeldeandthread. The potential
production of native vegetation on these soils is 1300 pounds on a normal year.
Soil Management Implications
Major uses are pasture and hayland. This unit suitability for rangeland is good, suitability for
crop land is fair and suitability for building site development is poor. Prime cropland if
irrigated.
Notes
Prime Farmland
Wind Erodibility Group: 6
Hydrologic Group: C
The Collide clay loam parent material is eolian material from a sandstone source. The Collide
clay loam is well drained. Typically, the top 0 to 10 inches is dark grayish brown clay loam.
The next 10 to 29 inches is yellowish red clay loam. The next layer to a depth of 60 inches is
yellowish red to light reddish brown clay loam.
Permeability of Collide clay loam is slow. Available water capacity is high. The potential
rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is high, the hazard of water erosion is slight. The
shrink-swell potential is high.
Similar inclusions are made up of Purcella soils on terraces.
McStone Aggregates, LLC 15 FEB 2008 ©WASTELINE,INC 2008 PN 5006.1-4(009)
