• 6. Alluvial Valley Floor
Alluvial Valley Floor - Determination. The drainage
traversing the permit area surrounding areas are divided as
follows:
Perennial Streams
Harvey Gap
West Elk Creek
Colorado River
Ephemeral Streams
Unnamed drainages into Harvey Gap
Unnamed drainages into West Elk Creek
Unnamed drainages into Colorado River
The alluvial valley floor tAVF) determinations for each of
the above drainage classes for the permit and adjacent areas
are presented in the following paragraphs.
Alluvial Valley Floor - Harvey Gap. Within the permit area,
unconsolidated stream laid deposits are confined to a narrow
band adjacent to the Harvey Gap stream channel. The surface
is coarse due to weathered material of the overlying bedrock
exposures being carried downslope by gravity. The rest of
• the deposit is poorly sorted due to the Iow energy level of
the stream. These deposits have been mixed with artificial
fill material derived from construction of the paved road
and from coal mine wastes from earlier periods of mining.
These deposits have been dissected to a depth of 80 feet by
the drainage.
Surface water quantity and quality records Csee Surface
Water Section) of the regulated reservoir flow in Harvey Gap
show that there is sufficient water available for flood
irrigation. In fact, this water is used for this pupose on
the alluvium of the Gotorado River. The Soil Conservation
Service CSCS> land classifications for the soils associated
with alluvial deposits of the permit area (see Figure ib:
Soil Classification - Eastside Mine Permit and Adjacent
Areas> were used to determine if any of these soils were
suitable for flood irrigation. Due to the narrow valley
width, none of the soils is suitable for flood irrigation or
other farming practices.
r1
LJ
65 Revised 5/87
