this coal. It was mined to provide coal for the local,
domestic market.
The early mining method used was "drill and shoot on the
solid". The coal was loaded into coals cars by hand and
transported to the surface by rail. Mules or small electric
locomotives pulled the cars.
The early mines were developed by driving entries in the
coal on the strike. This provided entries for ventilation
and haulage purposes. Rooms were then driven straight up
the dip for a distance between 125-200 feet. The coal would
then slide down the room and be loaded into cars at the
bottom. One previous mine operator attempted to mechanize
his mine by using diesel equipment to transport coal to the
outside.
Most of the coal seams in the general area have been mined.
The Harvey Gap Seam, the lowest coal seam in the section,
has been mined on both the east and west side of Harvey Gap.
The entries extend approximately 2,000 feet underground on
both sides of Harvey Gap.
The E Seam was mined in the late l970's and shut down in
• 1979. Exploration entries were driven by Eastside Goal
Company in the E Seam under Exploration Approval No.
CX-186-00 in 1983-84.
The Allen and Anderson seams have been mined on the west
side o4 Harvey Gap. Both seams are mined in approximately
1,500 feet from the outcrop. Exploration tunnels ware
driven into the Allen and Anderson Seams on the east side of
Harvey Gap.
Exploration tunnels were driven into the Sunny Ridge seam on
the east side of Harvey Gap. No mining has occurred in the
Sunny Ridge on the west side of Harvey Gap.
From all available information, the land
mining was undeveloped land. C.
