~` 2. General Requirements: Site Description and Land Use
Information
Site Description
The Harvey Gap Project is located in West Central Colorado
in Garfield County. The main surface facilities area is
located approximately 3.5 miles north of Silt, Colorado in
the NE 1/4, Section 24, T5S, R92W of the 6th Prime Meridan
(see Location Map HGP-5).
The area is accessible from Silt, north, via Garfield County
Road 237.
The largest structural basin located in Northwestern
Colorado is the Piceance Basin. One of the more prominent
structural features of the Piceance Basin is the Grand
HogbacK (Collins 1976>.
The mining operation is located on the Grand Hogback.
Structural relief of the Grand Hogback is greatest between
the New Castle area to Rio Blanco: in this stretch,
topographic relief commonly approaches and exceeds 2,000
feet (Collins 1976). The general topography in the vicinity
of the exploration area ranges from 7800 feet down to b400
feet. The slopes range between 30% to 50%. The main
feature in the area is Harvey Gap. This is an erosional
feature which cuts completely through the Grand HogbacK.
Smaller drainages occur on both sides of Harvey Gap but do
not cut completely through the Grand HogbacK. The entire
area is extremely steep with some of the resistant
sandstones forming dip slopes over the area. The Grand
Hogback trends in an east-west direction with the drainages
trending north-south.
The previously disturbed surface areas at the mining site
are in a transitional zone between the alluvial fill and the
steep slopes forming the Grand Hogback. Slopes within the
mining site range between ten percent C10%) to fifty percent
(50%). The topography of the area lends itself to very
abrupt changes in slope.
Land Use
The pre-mining land uses of the permit area are miring and
undeveloped land. Active mining, on an intermittant basis,
has occurred in the Harvey Gap area from the late 1800's
until 1979 (conversation with Louis Bendetti). The last
mine to operate in the area was the Eastside Mine operated
by Louis Bendetti A large market was never developed for
19 Revised 5/87
