Spot spraying was conducted for noxious weed infestations in 2007 as a follow-up to the 2005-2006
concentrated weed control program. Spraying was completed by BTUEC Mine Environmental Staff and
one of the grazing lessees. Targeted weed species included Russian knapweed, leafy spurge,
Houndstongue, hoary cress (white-top), Canadian thistle, and tamarisk. Selective herbicide applications
utilized 2,4-D amine, Banvel, Escort, triclopyr (tamarisk), and Activator 90. Spraying was conducted
from June through October.
Areas treated included, but were not limited to:
- Roadsides (main entry road, all roads on the plateau area south and west of the road leading to
the 7-North Angle Well, and portions of the main entry roads in both the east and west mine
facilities areas)
- Refuse Pile area
- No. 9 Mine Shop area
- Areas in and surrounding the west Mine Facilities area (i.e. Water Treatment Ponds,
Office/Warehouse, Bathhouse, Coal Handling Facilities, Railroad Spur, Wastewater Treatment
areas, and yard areas)
- The open meadow to the north of the reclaimed Mine No. 4 portals
The 2006 tamarisk treatment program, which focused on infestations in the vicinity of the water treatment
ponds and sewage lagoons, and in the southern portion of the property (over an area of roughly 20 acres)
located adjacent to agricultural lands, was effective in eliminating tamarisk in the treated areas, with no
regrowth.
Three lowland hay meadows (south of the stacking tube, north of the water treatment ponds, and west of
the railroad) were hayed during the year. BTUEC is working with a local rancher to contract agricultural
cropping activities for restoration of several disturbed areas where low cover values and weed/rodent
infestations are a concern.
Attached are copies of the standard form (CDRMS) Annual Reclamation Report for 2007. If you have
any questions or require further information, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
For BTU
gyp,%~
_~~
Jerry ton
Enviro e al Manager
file:G:\Enuironmental\Empire\ARR\BTTJEC Annual RecL Report 2007.doc
