• completed by replacing available topsoil resources and revegetating
disturbance areas to establish an effective vegetative cover which will
control runoff, erosion, and provide effective habitat and grazing/forage
values for wildlife and domestic livestock.
4.05.6 SEDIMENTATION PONDS
A total of five (5] sedimentation ponds provide effective sediment control
for the Southfield operations. Three (3) of these ponds, Ponds 1, 4, and
5 are located in the mine area as shown on the Mine Area Surface and
Groundwater Hydrology Map (Map 12), and Drainage and Sediment Control Map,
(Map 20). The remaining two (2) ponds, Ponds L-1 and L-2 are located at
the Southfield loadout as shown on the Loadout Area Surface and
Groundwater Hydrology Map, (Map 13). Generally, sedimentation ponds are
located as close as possible to the contributing disturbed area. None of
the sedimentation ponds are located within the floodplains of any
perennial streams, since no perennial streams as defined by Part 1.04
• exist within the Southfield permit areas. Classification of streams
within the permit areas is described in detail in Section 2.04.7,
Hydrology Description.
The noted sedimentation ponds were constructed by Dorchester prior to
EFCI's purchase of mining and loadout operations in 1985. EFCI
subsequently modified the two (2) ponds in the loadout area, improving
their effectiveness and bringing them into compliance with applicable
regulatory standards. Based upon current mining and reclamation plans,
the five (5) existing ponds should provide effective sediment control for
all anticipated disturbance over the remainder of the mine life. A
detailed description of existing sedimentation ponds presented in Section
2.05.3 under the subtitle, "Mine Facilities".
Complete detailed plans, calculations and design specifications for
sedimentation ponds are presented in Exhibit 19, Drainage and Sediment
Control Plan. These plans included descriptions, cross sections, and
• design specifications for these structures, which along with the
information provided within this section, demonstrate compliance with
applicable provisions of Part 4.05.6. In addition to compliance with
4.05-14
