West Elk Mine 2006 Annual Hydrology Report 22
3.2.3.8 grin G-49a
- Spring G-49a is located on the north flank of Jumbo Mountain, west of Gribble Gulch, in an
unnamed drainage tributary to the North Fork (Map 2). The spring is situated north of the Jumbo
Mountain mine panels. Flow is perennial, but diminishes in the autumn. This spring issues from
alluvium and hydrological monitoring measurements are taken at the end of an outflow pipe from
an enclosed spring house. It is recommended that this monitoring station be deleted from the
hydrologic monitoring plan, because mining activities have moved well east of the Jumbo
Mountain area and there have been no measurable mining-induced impacts at this site.
3.2.4 Springs above the E Seam in the Minnesota Creek and Dry Fork
Drainage Basin
3.2.4.1 Spring J-4
Spring J-4 is located in East Gulch East of Horse Gulch and is tributary to Dry Fork and Minnesota
Creek (Map 2). It is situated south of the SE mine panels and north of the SOD area. This spring
issues from alluvium, is seasonal, and is normally dry in late summer or autumn. Monitoring at
this spring began in 1981.
3.2.5 New Spring Monitoring Sites Added in WY 2006
3.2.5.1 Springy 35-3
Spring 35-3 is located in upper Deep Creek which is tributary to the North Fork (Map 2). This
spring is located in the SOD area that is scheduled for development between years 2009 and 2013.
The source of this spring appears to issue from alluvium. Baseline monitoring of Spring 35-3
began in the spring of 2006 and included measuring flow, collecting field water quality data, and
collecting samples for laboratory water quality analyses from May through October 2006 (CDMG,
2006). Routine monitoring at this location will commence in WY 2007.
3.2.5.2 Deer Creek Spring
Deer Creek Spring is a decreed domestic spring located in Deer Creek which is tributary to Dry
Fork. It is located west of the SOD area. The source of this spring is not known. Baseline
monitoring of Deer Creek Spring began in the spring of 2006. Baseline monitoring of this station
included measuring flow, collecting field water quality data, and collecting samples for laboratory
water quality analyses from May through October 2006 (CDMG, 2006). Routine monitoring will
commence in WY 2007.
December 2007 HydroGeo, Inc.
