2. 8 INDUSTRIAL WATER CIRCUIT
Climax operates with a recycle industrial water cir-
cuit. The system includes tailing delivery pipelines (8 and 11) ,
decantation and gravity flow (see Base .Map) to remove water from
the tailing ponds; and reservoirs (Base Map) , pumping facilities
(Base Map) and industrial water return lines (10, 13 , 29) complete
the system. A more comprehensive description of the industrial
water_ circuit is included in Section 8. under Water.
2. 9 AGGREGATE MINING
Significant quantities of aggregate to. substantiate the
operation are required of an industrial development the size of '
the Climax Mine. The Arkansas aggregate area (4) was opened for
mining during 1962 . Previous aggregate sources have since been
abandoned, some covered by tailing.
To prevent water pollution from fine soil particles,
the Arkansas River was diverted around the aggregate area and
settling ponds were constructed to clear the water before it is
recycled through the aggregate circuit.
At the time this aggregate area was started, all top-
soil was removed and stockpiled in the aggregate area (4) to be
used for reclamation when the area was abandoned. In 1978 , the
aggregate plant will be moved to the Kokomo aggregate area (part
of 27) where production is expected to last seven years, after
which time aggregate operations will return to the Arkansas area.
2-12
