Southward view of Deer Creek valley, the Dry Fork road (foreground), and the eastern part of the
excavation for the Deer Creek Ventilation Shaft and Escapeway (right foreground). Longwall panels E2 through E5,
and parts of the main haulageway for the SOD mining area are projected to be located beneath the Deer Creek
drainage. Traverse F-F' of the spring and fall field visits (2007) is located in the Deer Creek drainage above
projected longwall panels E3 through E6. Note the spring discharge area (willows) at the lower left side of the pine
trees in the right-central portion of the photograph.
T'he landslide in the Deer Creek Ventilation Shaft and Escapeway area. which is visible in the
1963 USGS aerial photographs, appears to have been stable since 1963, even during the very wet
periods of the mid 1980s and 199Os, based on a comparison of the 1963 USGS photos and the
?U04 VVcst Elk Mine; color photos. This access road is in soil and
colluvium of clay and silt derived primarily from deposits of Wasatch Formation.
