Fall 2007 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, Apache Rocks, and South of Divide Mining Areas
•
•
•
Figure 21. Fall 2007 southward view of the upper part of the active rockfall/landslide scarp located at the head
of the first east side canyon of Sylvester Gulch above mined longwall panel 22. The shaded part of the scarp is
always in the shade because of the low sun angle of late September.
Previous observations from this location show that the rocktall!landslide activity increased
significantly after longwall panel 22 was mined. However, photographs taken in April 2007
(Figure 16) and July 2006 (Figure D-6) s}u»v little change other than seasonal differences. Some
renewed activity, however, was observed during this fall field visit at the northern edge of the
southern segment of the slide (lower right foreground of Figure ? I ).
This headscarE~ area is best viewed from the west side of Sylvester Gulch (photographic
observation points ~ anci ~, Map l ). :annual photographic obsen~ation point 4 was established in
July 2003 (see Figure D-7). September 27, 2007 (Figure 22) and July 2006 (Figure D-~)
photographs from this same location are provided for comparative purposes.
