• k. WILD AND SCENIC RIVER
Leasing of the proposed modification area will
not impact any Wild and Scenic River.
1. WILDERNESS
The proposed modification area is not located
within or near any identified wilderness study
area.
2. Soils
Direct Impacts- Since no active surface disturbance
is proposed, no soil impacts would result from this
action. Subsidence could occur, which could result
in some low-volume, localized soil erosion.
Indirect Impacts- No impacts have been identified.
Cumulative Impacts- At the time that support
pillars are removed, a cumulative impact from
subsidence could occur throughout the mined area.
However, in light of the requirement in State
regulations to conduct operations in such a manner
as to control or prevent effects of subsidence,
• this is not expected to be a major concern.
3. Geoloav and Mineral Resources
Direct Impacts- Evidence of possible subsidence
fractures was noted on National King Coal's Federal
lease P-058300 in 1980 during the process of
preparing the Environmental Assessment for
Emergency Coal Lease C-29125. The fractures were
observed in an area approximately 300 feet north of
the emergency lease boundary and on the east limb
of Federal lease P-058300. The area of possible
subsidence is above the western edge of the pillars
that were extracted in the King Coal Mine in 1979.
A condition of approval of National King Coal's
mine permit revision for Lease C-29125 by Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology was that
subsidence would be monitored on a quarterly basis.
The monitoring would be to determine if any new
subsidence is occurring and if the Huntington ditch
is being affected in any way. The last report of
November, 1990 by Cliff Schmid, Registered Land
Surveyor and Fred M. Johnson, Certified Geologist
• 14
