2.0 Treatment Plant
The Treatment Plant consists of a series of reagent mix tanks and reaction tanks mounted in a 47-
foot long truck trailer. There are two barium chloride mix tanks of 370 and 300 gallons,
respectively and one ferric sulfate mix tank of 230 gallons. These mix tanks contain dilute
solutions of chemicals that feed into the untreated waterline. The feed rate is controlled with
metering pumps and the chemicals are mixed into the water via in-line static mixers.
After chemical dosing, the water flows into two 335-gallon reaction tanks. These reaction tanks
are equipped with mixers that provide additional contact time between the treatment chemicals
and the natural contaminants in the water (i.e., radionuclides and trace metals). The water flows
by gravity from the second reaction tank into a large Settling Tank located outside of the trailer.
The chemical precipitates containing the contaminants settle out as a sludge in the bottom of the
settling tank.
In addition to the aforementioned tanks, the Treatment Plant is equipped with a digital flow
meter where the water is pumped into the plant and aWebmaster / WebAlert system that can be
used to monitor the plant from anoff--site location. Telephone service had not yet been installed
at the time of the October 23rd inspection; accordingly, the Webmaster system was not
operational. Other trailer components include a 5-gallon eye wash system and the electrical
panel. A generator was being used to supply power to the system.
At the time of the field inspection, the final connections were being made between the portable
plant and the Untreated Water Tank in preparation for the startup of water treatment operations.
The plant components were inspected and appeared to meet the specifications for the project.
Reagents were neatly stored at the south end of the trailer and a spill containment tank was
located next to the southwest corner of the trailer. The spill containment tank has an approximate
volume of 400 gallons and is connected to the trailer floor drain. It is designed to provide
secondary containment for the treatment plant.
Additional information regarding the Treatment Plant is provided in Lyntek's Mine Water
Treatment Report dated November 2007, which is included as Attachment A.
2
