1.0 Introduction
The Whirlwind water treatment system was designed with portable components that can be
quickly erected or disassembled as needed. The treatment plant, which is housed in a tractor
trailer, was constructed by Lyntek Incorporated at its facility in Denver, Colorado and brought to
the Whirlwind Mine in mid-September 2007. In lieu of water treatment ponds, large fabricated
tanks manufactured by ModuTank Inc. were purchased and installed at the site. Erection of the
tanks and installation of water lines and valves were completed by KGL Associates of Golden,
Colorado between September 18, 2007 and October 19, 2007. The construction and installation
of the treatment plant, tanks, waterlines, and associated valves and pumps were completed under
the supervision of the following Energy Fuels personnel: Jeff Osborn (Engineering Manager),
Tim Pierce (Class A Wastewater Treatment Operator), and Frank Filas (Environmental
Manager).
The treatment system consists of an untreated water tank, portable trailer-mounted treatment
plant, settling tank, polish tank, and associated waterlines and pumps. Jeff Osborn and Frank
Filas met with Tim Pierce on October 23, 2007 at the site and conducted a final field inspection
of the system components. The primary purpose of this report is to document as-built conditions
at the time of the inspection with emphasis placed on the constructional integrity of the tanks and
piping systems. Figure 1 shows the configuration of the treatment system at the time of the
inspection.
This report also provides guidance to Energy Fuels Resources Corporation field personnel in
operating and monitoring the system. Monitoring reports and checklists will need to be
developed and filled out on a regular schedule during treatment operations. The preliminary
Material Containment and SPCC Plan will also need to be updated to reflect as-built conditions.
