Highway and Bridges
Mr. Buffington's experience in geotechnical investigations for streets, highways and bridges includes
the following:
Support Corridor Study, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Responsible for the preliminary geotechnical and
peoenvironmental investigation for route selection of a new access road from I-25 to the Albuquerque
international Airport. The project was jointly funded and subject to review by the Federal Highway
Administration, the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department and the City of Albuquerque.
Involvement include evaluation of the impacts of a closed municipal landfill, uncontrolled dumps and
the South Valley Superfund site on design and construction of the roadway. Recommendations and
guidelines were prepared for construction of pavement and bridges over the areas of the municipal
dump.
Los Alamos-Santa Fe Relief Route. Santa Fe County, New Mexico. Conducted the geotechnical and
engineering geologic evaluation for the route selection study phase of the project. This involved a
comparative analysis of five alternative routes. Assessments were made of rock slope stability, tunnel
feasibility, foundation conditions for four bridge alternatives over the White Rock Canyon of the Rio
Grande, including a cable stay suspension bridge, and assessments of the effects of crossing a series
of ancient landslides.
Coal Haul Railroad, Lee Ranch Mine, McKinley County, New Mexico. Completed the geotechnical
' investigation fora 17 mile railroad spur, including subgrade profile investigation for track support
design and foundation investigations for two bridges subject to 100 ton unit coal car loading.
Alignment crossed extensive areas of cotlapsing and expansive soils.
1
1
1
1
1
1

East Central Streets Project -Phase III, Salt Lake City, Utah. Performed subgrade investigation and
pavement design for two miles of city street reconstruction. Project included a demonstration sections
of cement and lime subgrade stabilization.
Low Flow Conveyance Channel Bridges, Socorro County, New Mexico. Performed geotechnical
investigation for three bridges within the Rio Grande floodplain. Design recommendations were
developed for augercast and driven pipe pile foundations which included assessment of effects of
liquefaction of the site soils under moderate historic earthquakes.
TERA Access Road. Socorro. New Mexico. Performed geotechnical investigation for route selection
study of 9 mile access road to a government research facility. Evaluations were made of foundation
conditions for three bridges and subgrade conditions for pavements. An evaluation of impacts of
extensive collapsing soils were also made.
Paseo dal Norte, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Work for a new urban freeway included subgrade
characterization studies and pavement design for 9 miles of roadway and foundation investigations for
the grade separation bridges.
1
