Project
experience also includes geotechnical investigations for roadway and railroad alignments and for airport
facilities.
Heap Leach Design:
Mr. Buffington has been in responsible charge of the geotechnical investigation and design
development for eleven cyanide heap leach gold processing facilities. Final design documents were
prepared under his direction for seven of these projects. Work completed included site characterization
studies, evaluation of alternative impervious liner systems for the leach pad and solution ponds,
evaluation of stress and deformation of liner systems, static and dynamic slope stability analysis of
operational heaps, contaminant migration analysis, and development of operational monitoring and
closure plans.
Water Retention and Tailings Dams:
Project responsibility has included the geotechnical investigation and design of various dams including
earthfill, rockfill, tailings embankments and roller compacted concrete structures. Responsibilities
include site exploration; construction materials investigations; stability, settlement and seepage
analysis; design development of drainage provisions and foundation grouting requirements; and
providing observation and consultation services during construction.
